Several: A kidney infection is different from a bladder infection (cystitis).  It has gone higher up the urinary tract.  For this reason, symptoms my be different.  This is usually quite serious and may cause fever, chills, pain on the affected side in the upper back, nausea and vomiting and pain with urination. Signs of kidney infx: A kidney infection is a urinary infection which has spread beyond the bladder to the kidney. An "ordinary" bladder infection makes you feel like you have to pee all the time yet only a little bit may come out. Sometimes it hurts to pee and sometimes you see blood in the urine. If the infection gets up into the kidney you may also feel pain in your back, have a fever, and even shaking chills.

Post-coitus uti's are common but they are w/our own flora.  Persons can have alterations in their microbial flora if they have a change in environment (i.e.:a hospital stay) ; then become infected with those organisms if present in the wrong place at the right time.
