Nothing!: The bellybutton is essentially scar tissue (left over from the neonatal umbilical cord) that is fused with the abdominal wall.  There are some pediatric surgical problems involving remaining attachments to the umbilical stump, but normally the belly button is not "attached" to anything.  In fact, many laparascopic surgeries use the belly button as an entry point into the abdomen.

Skin infection: Without seeing this infection i would discuss hygeine and keeping the ring clean.  But, if antibiotics do not help then the temporary removal of the ring may be warranted until the infection is fully treated.

Often do to a fungus: Often do to Candida, a yeast.  Usually will respond quickly to a combination cream (anti-fungal plus a cortisone type medication), for example, Lotrisone cream applied sparingly twice daily.  First, clean the skin with soap and water; blot dry with tissue, then apply the cream.  Rarely is the infection due to bacteria such as staph aureus which would require an antibiotic.

Many things: For example if after a shower you don't dry the umbilicus (belly button) well you might start a yeast condition. Also irritation from elastic from underwear can cause itching &amp; irritation. Check to make sure the umbilicus is clear of any debris like hair and threads. I have advised many patients that after a bath or shower use a hairdryer to make sure the umbilicus is dry.

Reflex: There is a so-called "gastro-colic" reflex in that when you ingest food, neural messages are sent to the colon to start getting active; you may be sensitive in such a way that you feel the effects of this;.

Not true: Embryologically speaking, there is a loose connection, both being part of immature forming GI tract, but there is no physical connection, which is what you are asking, i think?

Omphalitis!: Belly button infections are quite rare in adults, unless due to trauma from piercings. This usually responds to oral antibiotics.  If it recurs, one should search for an umbilical cord remnant connecting the belly button to the intestine or bladder (this can be seen on cat scan).  If present, surgical excision is necessary.
