can i use retin a (tretinoin) on belly button rejection scar? took the ring out 3 months old and almost closed. scar isn't changing. will retin a (tretinoin) help?

No: Retin a (tretinoin) type medications are really for the treatment of acne.  For scars it is best to avoid sun, so use sunscreen or keep the scar covered.  You can try some of the over the counter scar cream or vitamin e cream.  There is some evidence that it could help.  Scarring does take time and it can take many months to see how the scar will mature.  They are red at first and turn white later.

i've had a stitch-like pain in my right abdomen, level with my belly button for 6 months. comes and goes daily (more frequent lately), mild to moderate.  abdomen not tender and, apart from gurgling sounds,  no other symptoms and feel fine otherwise?

: If you have concerns about this ongoing but mild discomfort consult a physician or abdominal surgeon for evaluation and advice. You could have a tiny umbilical hernia. If you've had previous abdominal surgery, adhesions are a possibility. I wouldn't expect simple gas pains to always occur in the sane place.

my pre-laparoscopy belly button was a normal "innie". post-op bellybutton looks like the skin has been pulled across from one side to the other and glued/stitched. will it go back to normal? wasn't told in the hospital if i had stitches?

: The navel may take up to 6 weeks to fully heal. Raise your concern at your postop checkup visit.

Unlikely: If you do not have unintentional weight loss, its probably unlikely related especially as youve had it for years. Cramps and non bloody diarrhea could be irritable bowel but best to see your doctor to ensure its not your stomach or an inflammatory bowel.

Monitor: This is a key area for hernias to occur.  They can be very small at 1st and not easily felt or detected on x-rays.

i had laproscopic hernia surgery in 2005. since then, my belly button has been very tender, painful and has gone black twice. also, i have had stitching protrude to where i have had to cut it back so it won't snag my shirt?

: I assume you had repair of an umbilical hernia. I think you should consult the operating surgeon or another abdominal surgeon for evaluation&amp;advice.  Nonabsorbable sutures and wire mesh are in place but these symptoms raise suspicion that something is amiss 
within the operative site.

i had laparoscopy surgery six months ago. i have two questions: i have a weird sensation in my belly button that is a little bit painful at times, is that normal? also i cannot get my belly ring back in even though i dont recall stitches there?

: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, and physical examination. Your symptoms may be due to entrapment of nerve in a scar. It would be prudent to talk to your surgeon. Belly ring is not a health issue but a cosmetic one. Your doctor may be able to assist with that.

Contact dermatitis: The most common cause i see for itching in that area is allergy to a metal, usually nickel. Most people wear a metal belt buckle, or have a metal snap and/or zipper on their pants, and if you're allergic to the metal in that buckle or snap, it will cause itching. Another possibility is that you may have gotten an irritating substance of some sort trapped inside your belly button.

Perhaps infection: try cleaning it with 1/2water/1/2 hydrogen peroxide and put topcial antibiotic ointment in it with cotton tip applicator. If not better see dermatologist
