Can't tell without : Seeing it. Hives? Normal sting symptoms may include pain, itching, swelling, redness ; tenderness of the affected area. Milder allergic reactions: swelling of &gt; 4 inches (baseball), nausea, GI cramps, diarrhea. Severe allergic reactions may present with swelling of tongue, mouth, lips or throat; difficulty swallowing ; breathing, wheezing, tightness of the chest, hives, generalized weakness, .

Benedryl: The nasty reactions(breathing pbs) to a bee sting will be evident within 15-20 min if they require er care. Swollen extremities or hives can often be minimized by giving Diphenhydramine (benedryl) in proper doses every 4-6 hrs. If the kid has major sx like abdominal pain & lethargy with the event, a workup by an allergist may be worthwhile soon as rxns can worsen in the future.

approximatey 3 weeks ago i was stung on the inside of my elbow (in the bend) by what appeared to be a sweat bee.  i immediately applied alcohol to the sting.  it has itched in that area every day since the sting and i apply alcohol each time it itches.  yesterday a cluster of 12-15 small bumps appeared in the area of the sting.  i am looking for advice on how to treat the area as it itches also.  thank you.

See dermatologist: It might be infected. See dermatologist for either tx of the allergic nature of the sting or a secondary infection.

will my 4 yr old daughter likely be allergic to bee stings if her mother has anaphylaxis to bee stings? she gets a rash with amoxil (amoxicillin).

Uncertain: There is no guarantee that she will develop the same allergy as her mother, and the rash with Amoxicillin also does not suggest what, if anything else, she is allergic to. The best advice would be to see your physician who can perform either rast testing (blood test) or skin prick testing while keeping the mothers history in mind.

Multistep: Remove stinger by scraping along edge of skin with a credit card.  Clean area with soap & warm water.  Apply ice in 10 minute increments; alternating 10 on & 10 off.  Try a bag of cold peas. You can take meds like tylenol, (acetaminophen) Aspirin or Motrin for pain or Benadryl for swelling.  Make a paste of 2 parts baking soda & 1 part water & apply.  Throat, airway or tongue  swelling, short of breath – call 911.

Careful observation: Fortunately, the vast majority of people are not allergic to insect stings. Immediate management of a sting, even in a baby, includes placement of an ice pack on the area and tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain. If a stinger remains, don't try to pull it out. Careful scraping along the skin with a rigid card or otherwise will slowly remove it. If a patient develops hives, Benadryl is the first medication to give.

Bee sting: Immediately ice packs will help decrease the swelling. Also antihistamines and or advil (ibuprofen) will help along with relieving the pain.

Easy to see: When stung, the bee actually leaves the stinger behind attached to the venom gland. Scraping it sideways to prevent squeezing more venom into the wound is recommended. If you don't see a gland attached it is either out or you were stung by something else.
