To opacify: Your bowel loops. Makes interpreting the ct scan easier. By the time you are scanned the barium should be all the way to your colon.

No,: the barium suspension is inert and doesn't get absorbed by the body. It passes through and is eliminated in the stool.

Not usually: Barium sulfate is essentially inert. The most common complication is constipation. Drinking plenty of water usually overcomes this problem.
