Dr. can check if ok: Cracking a joint moves the parts of the joint, with the cracking noise coming from cartilage surfaces sliding, from movement of a little air-space from one place in the joint to another, or from some other non-traumatic event. A person with no joint pains before or after cracking a joint is probably not damaging the joint. However, a doctor can check to see how usual or unusual one's cracking is.

i broke my back a  year ago, my back cracks all the time and in one position it hurts alot when i crack it but feels better after, is this bad?

Yes if you broke it: cracking the back by yourself unless you are a chiropractor. or a message therapist is not a good idea in a good healthy back nerveless  in a broken one, even if you feel better after, stop before you cause a major neurologic damage and it will be too late

No just aware: 21y fem. has "multiple cracking" sounds emanating from low back as she stands and walks. There is no mention of pain. Bone/joint crepitations are characteristic of those who have joint Hypermobility Syndrome. The vertebral spine elements, the vertebrae &amp; disks, do not generate crepitations. If concerned, see an Osteopath.

Cracking normal: Creaking or cracking of joints is usually normal particularly if there is no pain or restricted motion. It's like cracking your knuckles.

Ok: This is ok and you are doing your own spinal manipulation like cracking your knuckles.  You are most likely "cracking" your facet joints which stretches their joint coverings or capsules which causes a reflex relaxation of the surrounding back muscles giving you relief. There is no harm in you doing this.

However, people with osteoporosis or prolonged sitting in one position or those lack of exercise might have more tendency of back cracks without pain at beginning. You need take vitamin d and calcium, participate muscle strength exercise to prevent pain occur.
