See allergist: Hydrocortisone applied on large portion of the body on a regular basis will likely cause systemic side effects given that the basic problem of eczema is an impairment in skin barrier function. You should consult an allergist to manage the eczema since the problem is unlikely to improve at least for a few years. In the meanwhile, be sure to apply moisturizer on the skin within 3 mins after bathing.

No: Stopping the steroid does not cause flairs, but using it suppresses symptoms. Sun exposure will help and a good moisturizer with colloidal oatmeal can also improve things. You also should avoid antibacterial soap.

Eat good fat: Which may help lubricate your skin.  That could be coconut oil and/or olive oil.  About 3 tblsp. Daily.  Avoid skin creams w/alcohol in them.  Stick w/your doc.  Peace and good health.

That Depends: I assume you are referring to topical hydrocortisone.  If your eczema is well controlled, you do not need to taper off a topical, but when you do, the eczema may return. If so, see your doctor. If it is an oral steroid, tapering depends on how long you have been on them. I would recommend asking the prescribing physician for oral steroid tapering schedule.

Pro topic, elidel (pimecrolimus): Pro topic or Elidel (pimecrolimus) are non cortisone creams which can br used for eczema. Barrier repair creams such as hylatopic, eletone can be used as part of regimen for treating eczema. They can be used in combination. Oral supplements that are helpful include zinc and essential fatty acids found in flaxseeds. Depending on the extent and location allergy patch testing could help.

Yes: I don't use anything stronger than 1/2% on face unless there is thickened irritated skin &amp; then only 2X/day. Using 1% on all other skin is fine for most sites up to several times a day. The 1% is not absorbed into the serum/blood to the point it would trigger any significant issues. However, any steroid can thin the skin so you must decrease use when this happens &amp; eczema is controlled.

i have a 3 month old son with eczema and was told to use hydrocortisone 1%, 3 days caused white patches in face and neck, is this permanent? how long?

Probably not: I suspect that the patches would go away after the skin problem has been controlled.  But if the patches remain &gt; a month after the hydrocortisone has been stopped, see your pediatrician.
