my girlfriend, (34/f) started taking bactrim on 2/15 (3 days ago) for a uti infection. we're currently vacationing in the philippines and she caught travelers diarrhea. her doctor gave her zithromax for emergencies. can she take these meds together?

: The sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim should not interfere with the nuclei acid testing. I’m curious as to what makes you think it is caused by chlamydia...If you DO, indeed, have a U. T. I., you should probably finish the Bactria DS. A single 1 gram dose of azithromycin is still the recommended treatment for uncomplicated chlamydia urethritis—and is a LOT cheaper than an NAAT chlamydia test...

Neither one: If you have persistent cough , you need to be evaluated thoroughly to find the cause of cough. Both antibiotics can work at some extent community acquired sensitive pathogen if indicated. First thing to find the cause of chronic cough and then treat the cause. See pulmonologist or your physician

if azythromycin 2g single dose is immediately followed by bactrim 800+160 for 8 days (1 pill every 12h) don't side effects compound? for instance, if both mess with qt and/or cause diarrhea, having both doesn't increase risk of those side effects?

: No side effects would be expected from either drug, or from the two together. QTc problems are uncommon with single dose azithromycin.

: Bactrim has weak efect against chlamydia -- you should not rely on it for cure. However, the combination of bactrim plus azithromycin (1 gram, single dose) for sure will be effective. (Is your chlamydial infecion proved? It would be very unlikely to have a positive test result while taking bactrim.)
