can you get cataracts for using azelastine 0.1 % nasal spray daily during the allergy seasons (~3 months)?

Accepted Answer

: Azelastine is histamine 1 receptor antagonist. It’s side effects are drowsiness, and bitter taste in mouth. Less common are nosebleeds, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, eye pain, eye redness, rapid heart beat, and trouble breathing. I did not find cataract being caused by azelastine in literature. Periodic eye exam should be done as part of regular healthcare. Hope it helps.

can i take an additional oral antihistamine with azelastine nasal spray? for chronic rhinitis, i find the affects of the spray wear off after 5 hours

Yes: There is no problem in using both.   Have you tried a combination with both a nasal steroid and nasal azelastine?  Consider seeing an allergist.

can i take afrin nasal spray and azelastine around the same time? have cold and want afrin for stuffy nose. want azelastine for post nasal drip.

Accepted Answer

Yes: You can safely use afrin twice a day for 3-5 days without any prolonged harmful effects i.e. Rebound congestion.  This would actually allow improved delivery of Astelin to your nasal passages when they are swollen.

whats the difference between azelastine and fluticasone nasal spray? does both medication increase chances of cataracts in the eyes? is one safer than the other?

: Azelastine is an antihistamine and fluticasone is a steroid. Fluticasone has a potential to induce cataract when used for a prolonged period.  However, such risk potential for fluticasone spray is still very low.

can you take mucinex daytime (dextromethorphan, guaifenesin, & phenylephrine) with azelastine nasal spray?

Yes: Yes, this is a safe combination of medications.

currently on 2 x 20mg omeprazole and dymista nasal spray(fluticasone/azelastine) for pnd and lpr. can i take oregano oil and probiotics also?

Accepted Answer

Mgt: You can take both of these in the usual quantities.Oregano oil is not  a tested medication. 
 I would suggest eating well before bedtime, limiting alcohol/ caffeine and sleeping with an additional pillow. If these measures are not helpful your medications may need an adjusted dose.

Yes: I prescribe it to my patients quite often. I recommend it for patients that have allergic rhinitis and/or nasal congestion - often in conjunction with a nasal steroid spray.  Together, they can work quite well for nasal symptoms of rhinitis.

been taking azalestine nasal spray for over a month. got some skin blotches and itchiness on right forearm today. is this from the azalestine?

Unlikely: azelastine is an antihistamine nasal spray, although can be systemically absorbed, but even though very rare to cause such symptom, unrelated, you need to look for other causes, see your doctor or dermatologist for better evaluation, best wishes

i have nasonex (mometasone) and astelin (nasal spray) but i am not sure wich one will be the best for sinus congestion. please suggest me which one to take.

Depends.: Nasonex (mometasone) is more of a preventative medication uses for allergic conditions.  If one controls the allergy then no stuffy nose.  For more acute action, the Astelin may be better.  It is a topical antihistamine spray of sorts.  At your next visit, ask your pcp for advise or your allergist.

No: It does not affect the blood pressure.
