can cholesteatoma be cured?

Yes: Cholesteatoma refers to a growth pushing through areas of the ear drum & mastoid bone.  Sometimes there is fatty substance inside, sometimes it's just epithelial tissue (like mucous membrane tissue).  Surgery is the treatment if the cholesteatoma is causing difficulties, such as dizziness, pain, invading bone, or is chronically infected.

Depends on findings: If it is a small cholesteatoma that is easily removed it is possible that he may only require one surgery. More typically it is a more extensive cholesteatoma which requires more extensive removal and likely will necessitate a second look surgery with possible reconstruction of the ossicular chain (which are the bones that attach the eardrum to the inner ear – the malleus, Incus, and stapes).

Pathology and tx: Keratosis is a condition caused by keratin buildup in the ear canal and a cholesteatoma is squamous tissue building up in the wall of the canal. Keratosis can be treated with debridement of the keratin from the canal. Cholesteatomas can require surgery.
