Yes: Cholesteatoma refers to a growth pushing through areas of the ear drum & mastoid bone. Sometimes there is fatty substance inside, sometimes it's just epithelial tissue (like mucous membrane tissue). Surgery is the treatment if the cholesteatoma is causing difficulties, such as dizziness, pain, invading bone, or is chronically infected.

Yes: Cholesteatoma is a condition that occurs in the ear canal or more commonly behind the ear drum in which the bony structures can be eroded. It is not a tumor but rather a destructive process that often is a result of previous infection. Surgery is curative. However, often more than one surgery is needed depending its extent at the time it is diagnosed. An ENT is the surgeon to seek for treatment.
