does weight gain affect head size in newborn? baby boy was born 7lbs & 7 oz. he was 9lbs & 12oz at 1 month. his head circumference grew by 3.5cm from birth to 1 month old! is this worrying?

: It is important that the head circumference was appropriately measured and you may want to put it on the growth chart. The head and body would grow with aging however the proportion of the head to the body would shrink over time. The trend on the growth chart should help you and also discuss with your pediatrician. If the baby is well why worry?

Intra-uterine viral: There are several intra-uterine infections causing small head size.These are TOXOPLASMOSIS,CMV,HERPES, and others.

: Average hear circumference for female is 21.5 inches, max size 22.6 inches.

Yes.: Weight varies with height.   But head size has nothing to do with height or weight.  So although it is possible that someone's body could grow to match their large head, there is no guarantee it will happen.   Further, the percentage of your body length that is your head is about 30% at birth, but only 10% as an adult, so babies tend to have bigger heads than adults.

: The problem may be how the headcircumference was measured rather than danger of hydrocephalus. Brain development with child stimulation and engagement is a good thing and not a bad thing; and this is the time for it so it may be good rather than a bad situation.

: I am not certain what 98% means in Texas but to me it would mean her head size with within 98% of kids her age. So normal. Following the growth curve of this and body size will be helpful.

Usually it is so..: Normally, head-size is proportional to height. In pediatric care, head circumference, length (height) and weight measurements are very important part of each well visit. Headsize and height will continue to grow proportionately until shortly after puberty. Once max growth in height is achieved, head size stops even if one continues to grow sideway (unfortuately too much in us). Good luck.

Depends: If it has changed from the 10% to the 97% since birth, I would be more concerned than if it was big all along. If his height and weight are on the larger side it would be more consistent with a normal variant. It didn't bother me much in life, except when looking for a helmet that would fit.
