Thyroiditis?: If you are referring to autoimmune thyroiditis ( hashimoto's disease)- this at first can cause an overactive thyroid ( hyperthyroidism) followed by decreased thyoid function ( hypothyroidism). You need to have your thyroid hormone levels balance to achieve balance. The medication may be need for a lifetime or the disease can resolve.

Non specific: CRP indicates systemic inflammatory  state that can include any organ in the body including the thyroid and the heart.As such it has a high sensitivity but low specificity  including risk for heart disease

Recheck your labs.: Your thyroid condition may be changing or progressing and could require a higher dose of replacement therapy.  Have your doc check the free T4 and TSH levels again and see if that is contributing to your weight gain.  If those numbers are normal, i would not blame your thyroid condition.

Hyperthyroidism: An overactive thyroid may make your skin prone to itching. Get your thyroid regulated before embarking on an extensive, and often elusive, workup.

Nothing if treated!: If treated appropriately, you do not have to have any long-term consequences from hyperthyroidism. If left untreated, the most serious concern is a heart problem like rapid or irregular heartbeat. Longstanding hyperthyroidism can cause osteoporosis (fragile bones) and fractures. If untreated, other issues can be psychiatric disease, weight loss, trouble sleeping, or eye disease.

Yes: Autoimmune thyroid disease can manifest as an enlarged thyroid, abnormal thyroid antibodies on lab testing, sometimes nodular thyroid, and yet thyroid function can be normal, low, or high.  Thyroid functions would be indicated by tsh, t4, T3 (liothyronine) levels.  Thyroid ultrasound would look for nodules.  There is no treatment for the autoimmune part, but abnormal thyroid function or nodules can be treated.

Yes: The way to check for autoimmune thyroid disease is to look for thyroid antibodies, specifically the thyroid peroxidase antibodies for hashimoto's thyroid disease and TSH receptor antibodies for graves' disease.  These antibodies are not typically checked on a basic thyroid panel.

Yes: The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is graves' disease.  The most common cause of hypothyroidism is hashimoto's thyroid disease.  Both of these are autoimmune diseases.

Not necessarily: Euthyroid means that at the moment you do not have biochemical hypo or hyperthyroidism. Not everyone with positive thyroid antibodies develops autoimmune thyroid disease. However, given that we know that your antibodies are positive, i would have your thyroid tests monitored regularly. How often  depends on your doctors opinion. I monitor people like you twice early.

is it true that taking probiotic supplements can make an autoimmune thyroid condition worse?

Accepted Answer

Unknown: There are no good clinical studies looking at most supplements, including probiotics as to whether they are of benefit or harmful.
