Things can improve: Although there is no "cure" for the autism spectrum disorders, children can show some significant improvement in their symptoms with intensive therapy.  
Communication and speech and language therapy, social skills groups and a specialized therapy know as aba therapy can help improve symptoms and enhance quality of life.  It is difficult and time comsuming (and sometimes expensive) but can help!

Therapies: Therapies such as aba (applied behavior analysis), speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy are some of the therapies which have been shown to help some of the weaknesses associated with autism.

False hope: Many people who care for someone with autism report effects that most physicians consider placebo effects. You won't cure autism, as much as we probably both like indian classical music, but there's no reason not to enjoy it.

Autism can be helped: New applications of new & older meds, optimal developmental & educational interventions & behavioral therapies can make a huge difference. Autism is a wide spectrum of problems/severities so some will get much, much better with optimal help & others may improve their lives only a bit. But more help exists now than ever before & i've seen many autistics (& their families) transform their lives.

No: Autism is a label used for a pattern of behavioral, social and learning issues that arise from a poorly defined origin. Supportive care helps the kid over his/her lifetime and most see some improvement. However, no one treatment or group of treatments will cure this process.Ongoing research should help us understand what helps the best.

Hard to say: Since there is no one test or feature to rely on for early diagnosis, some kids are labeled early on that later don't meet the criteria for diagnosis. As we come up with more reliable testing and markers (gene studies), it is likely that a clearer picture will emerge. Most kids that carry the label will improve over time and some will function well with minimal assistance.

Incorrect term: Cure is not the correct term and definitely not for those who have a genetic cause such as fragile x. You can, in some cases, make such significant improvements in the level of functioning that they no longer meet diagnostic criteria. This is  more likely the younger the child at the time intervention begins and the more multifaceted the approach.  Any delay deserves evaluation.

Cured no, better yes: There are a multitude of treatments available, & they are as varied as the person affected. Applied behavior anaylsis has been shown to help, it is very intensive.  A different but similar approach is "son-rise".  Some times adhd meds help. There is a large # of off label treatments (look at www.Autism.Com) that help some people, but don't have the published studies to convince most drs. To try.
