Hard to say.: The doc who ordered the test should know more about it.  I would suggest seeing a neurologist who can consider additional testing if needed.

does every auditory hallucination come from brain damage?

Accepted Answer

No: Usually auditory hallucinatios are from mental illness but theyt can come from drugs or delirium or brain damage.  The most common form of hallucinations from brain damage is visual hallucinations.  However, if an older person had voices we would worry about brain issues.  A younger person with voices is usually psychotic but we would still check the brain.

what part of the brain is affected if visual and auditory hallucinations and delusions appear in an elderly person?

If part of psychosis: That is a symptom of dementia due to alzheimer's disease or many small brain infarctions (multi-infarct dementia), there exists death of brain cells in many areas of the brain, but areas where cells are replaced by 'amyloid plaques and tangles' are usually concentrated in an area of the brain called the hippocampus. Once judgment, behavior, psychosis, hallucinations occur, it has spread to cortex.

is auditory afterimage normal? after my phone finished ringing i could still hear faint sounds of my ringtone for sometime. happens when i listen to a sound mostly. is it a cause of concern? is there something wrong with my brain?

: I'm not convinced that the cause of auditory or visual after image is known, but if it occurs shortly after the actual phone ringing or visual image,I don't think it's abnormal in contrast to auditory or visual hallucinations that occur independent of preceding stimuli. At least I hope so as I've experienced such episodes on a few occasions. I never discussed this with my neurology colleagues tho

axial 3-d fiesta through the internal auditory canals (iacs) - would this mri w/o contrast show a brain tumor? worried something was missed elsewhere in brain?

None: No test shows activity directly. Some tests can be used to assess certain functions of the brainstem. This includes vestibular testing, some forms of autonomic testing, eye movement testing, among others.

Vagus nerve: The vagus nerve can be activated by bearing down as you would having a bowel movement. This results in increased vagal tone which temporarily slows the heart rate. Making yourself gag by putting your finger in the back of your throat also activates the vagus nerve resulting in transient slowing of the heart rate. Yes, results are : based on number correct out of total.The PASAT is a measure of cognitive function that assesses auditory information processing speed and flexibility, as well as calculation ability. It is used for patients with MS, not as a test pf general cognitive ability.

Its  great!: MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment is just what it says its MILD Scores like the AVL VARY with time/ If you are on Medication sounds like ITS WORKING!

couldn't sleep in mslt- had short dreams/auditory hallucinations before being jolted awake when drifting off. was the test basically a total waste?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily: The fact that you had dreams during an MSLT is, by itself, unusual and help your doctor make the diagnosis of narcolepsy or a different sleep disorder.

Most people do not dream during the short naps associated with the MSLT.  When people do dream, it can be suggestive of sleep onset REM/

I would discuss this with your family doctor or your sleep physician.
