Unlikely....: Symptoms of an asthma exacerbation include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, etc. These symptoms will awaken you or cause you not to be able to fall asleep in the first place. If you experience shortness of breath, see your doctor ASAP or go to the ER.

why is it that people have asthma attacks while they are sleeping and can it eventually kill you?

Nocturnal asthma: Asthma symptoms that occur at night (usually around 2-3 am) is a problem if it occurs more than twice a month.  This can mean the asthma is not controlled.  The reasons are many-lower blood cortisol level, breathing in indoor allergens and/or cool dry air, and other reasons we don't understand. Death from asthma is uncommon but preventable. See your allergist.

Night: Asthma attacks are known to happen at 4 am due to increase bronchial tone at night.  You should consider taking your asthma control medication regularly and keep albuterol inh at bedside. If you have these night time symptoms regularly please d/w your physician, .

Wake up then die: Severe asthma attacks can occur any time but especially at night, typically 2-3 am.  If nighttime asthma symptoms occur more than 2x a month, then a person's asthma is not controlled.  Most asthma deaths that occur are in people who are not taking their daily asthma controller medications, overusing albuterol, psychiatric conditions, and more.  The asthma symptoms will wake you up...Don't ignore!

That depends on the : Severity of symptoms. If you are having difficulty breathing and wheezing please get help.

Possible: post nasal drip. Have you been diagnosed with asthma?  If you have been  &amp; you have a daily attack - then your asthma is not well controlled. At this point I would seek medical attention to get this under tighter control. Take care.

Review with doc 1st: Although this would seem to be an obvious help, please review your plans with someone who knows your case. Part of what keeps you breathing is the concentration of co2 in your blood and supplemental oxygen under the wrong circumstances could cause problems with your natural breathing drive system.

i had asthma attack due to flu while in hospital on tuesday and have been given steroids can't stop caughing since today help can't sleep what to do ?

Steroid insomnia: HIgh dose of steroid keeps people awake and you will likely sleep better as the dose is tapering down. However if you are still coughing, this may mean that either your asthma is still not well controlled or something else may be causing your cough.  If necessary, I may prescribe a sleeping pill for a few days when the dose of steroid is high.  (Steroid injection may linger on for a few days).

i believe my mom has asthma attack. it is hard for her to sleep, you can hear her lungs, it is hard for her to breathe or even speak. what can i help?

Have her seen: Breathing difficulty as that of an asthma attack doesn't improve until treated. Various lung infections and conditions can have similar symptoms. If her lung difficulties are preventing her from normal activities like sleep, self care, taking meals, etc. she should be evaluated.

CPAP and cough: Most likely thing that is happening is that either CPAP causing central events that is complex sleep apnea to CPAP pressure is incorrect. You may need a CPAP retitration in lab with attendant if it is done more than 1-2 years ago or never done. Asthma fa less likely but not impossible.
