It is use to lubricate the eye, especially in cases of eye dryness more than the average and is used in hospitals to protect the eyes in situations where the eyes might dry out.  It is a brand name, and there are a number of equivalent over the counter products with the same effect.

Hypotears (artificial tears): Hypotears: hypo tears lubricant eye drops, sterile, economy size 1 fl oz (30 ml) are lubricant eye drops available at amazon.Com or drugstore.Com and elsewhere. Commerically prepared eye lubricants are generally safe for anyone, any condition. The rare problem would be an allergy to a preservative or other component of the eye drops.

Artificial tears: Any brand of artificial tears should be ok to use.  If you need to administer the tears very frequently, preservative free tears may be better because you can get sensitized to the preservatives.

Dry eyes: I am guessing your ophthalmolgist said you have some degree of eye dryness.  Lacrilube (artificial tears) is a topical ointment useful to apply at night only just before sleep to help keep the eye protected during sleep.  If ineffective for you, then you might have to supplement during the day with a topical drop labeled lubricating or tear replacement.  Don't use the ones labeled "gets the red out".

Opinions will vary: "prolonged use" is a subjective term and there is no clear cut answer for your question, so this will vary from physician to physician.  For me, if you need artificial tears for a month, then there is a problem that should be investigated.   If it's just a few days or even 1-2 weeks then its likely not a problem.

How to refill?: Do you mean that you should get more ?  If it worked, and your eyes are dry and need the extra lubrication, then by all means get more.  If you mean can the bottle be refilled, i don't know how you would do this.  Larger reservoir bottles of tears naturale (artificial tears) are not for sale.  The bottle you emptied in use is disposable.  Tears naturale (artificial tears) is a fine product  and very useful.

It depends: There are many manufacturors and types of tears.  Certain patients have brand preferences.  However, i think of three general classes.  Tears for "mild dry eye", gels for "moderate dry eye" and ointments for "severe dry eye."  the thicker the product the more protection but also the more blur to vision.  Please discuss a strategy with your eye doctor.

is systane ultra (ud) the same as artificial tears?

A variant: Systane is a slightly thicker tear replacement which I call syrupy.  It will cling to the eye a little longer, providing more lengthy relief than ordinary tear replacements.  So commonly it is used less often although in extremely dry eyes the  schedule is very frequent.
