It depends: There are many manufacturors and types of tears. Certain patients have brand preferences. However, i think of three general classes. Tears for "mild dry eye", gels for "moderate dry eye" and ointments for "severe dry eye." the thicker the product the more protection but also the more blur to vision. Please discuss a strategy with your eye doctor.

Non preserved best: For daily use, preserved artificial tears, of which there are many, work well. Eyemds like the refresh brand given its long track record (no financial interest ). Use no more than 4x/d as they have a preservative that can cause an allergy. Nonpreserved at are best as no preservative present, can be used as often as needed, though cost more.

Many available : There are many brands to choose from with ingredients varying based in viscosity, water based, or petroleum based. I am particularly happy recommending refresh, systane, and genteal brand name products. They cover the whole range from low water based viscosity eye lubricants all the way to the long lasting ointments. The latter reserved for severe dry eyes. Trial refresh optive or systane ultra.

How frequent?: If you use them 2-3 times a day, any lubricating solution is fine. If you use them more than 5-6x a day, look for those without preservatives. Do not use those that claim to get the red out, etc.
