Expensive option: The newer ankle replacement devices easily cost $10, 000 to $20, 000.  Add in hospital costs and the surgical team and you are looking at an expensive surgery.  Many insurance companies cover these devices but you need to read your coverage carefully.  If you have an hmo or medicaid it might be more of a battle or they may only cover other options such as an ankle fusion.

MD Instructions: Your ortho md should have given you instructions to prepare you for your surgery  and what follows.  In short, recovery from ankle replacement takes many months. You will be able to bear weight relatively soon after the surgery. However, it will take many months to regain full range of motion and normalize your walking pattern. Difficult: Ankle replacement surgery should be last resort surgery. There are many risks involved including loosening of the implant and infection, however, when done well and the patient follows directions after surgery, the end result can be fantastic, like any other replacement surgery.

Variable: There is some pain involved because of soft tissues and bone are cut and manipulated.  Hardware also has to be placed.  Many surgeons performing use regional nerve blocks which substantially decrease and sometimes even eliminate the pain for an extended time.  Everyone has a different pain tolerance and response to pain medications as well.  In short the pain levels vary with individual cases.

6 months: Full recovery can take up to six months.  Most surgeons will limit weight bearing for a period of time.  I start pt at 6 weeks post op.
