Common in Atheletes: I see a lot of atheletes thst tend to develop arthritis in the ankle from repeted trauma and injury from sports like basketball, soccer, football and running.

Pain/stiffness: On ankle range of motion: especially after rest. May be some swelling and probably limited range of motion. If sever or persitent, see foot/ankle specilaist for evaluation and treatment.

STILL COULD BE DVT: Negative d dimer does not in my book rule out dvt
if the symptoms very suggestive you need to have a venous doppler 
if doppler is negative you treat for the other possibilities and some of them could be a superficial phlebitis
if the redness associated with swelling and if there any possible history of dm consider lymphadenitis
if perisitent see your pcp or see a vascular surgeon if possible.

Your ankle is broken, but not your life.

For that matter your ankle is on the mend, healing more little by little everyday, under the guidance of the hardware that is holding it straight so that it can heal.

Think of your life the same way.  Find some things to hold your life straight, maybe a mentor or positive relative.  And everyday focus on healing your life.

Neuropathic ankle pa: There are several reasons people can get burning heel pain.  Arthritis in the ankles can be a risk for focal nerve impingement at the ankle, but one cannot exclude the possibility of other locations that can cause these same symptoms.  This may include the spine or even the level of the smallest nerve fibers themselves.

knees make crunching and popping sounds. hurts to kneel, squat, etc.  i have rheumatoid arthritis in knees & ankles, not sure if related. any ideas?

Knee popping: You need to follow up with a Rheumatologist particularly at your age. You will need follow up xrays and labs. if this is due to your RA, your Rheumatologist will be able to tell by your xray and labs. There are great treatments for RA now, but they need to be started as early as possible and you need close follow up.

i had intra-articular fracture of both heels over a year ago and now i have arthritis in both ankles. pain is agonizingly high and my question is, will the pain progress and get worse with time or is it going to get somewhat better?

Physical therapy....: This is rather difficult to predict, especially given your young age. But, you can go to physical therapy and learn different exercises to do that will hopefully prevent further progression of the arthritis over time. The physical therapists can also see if any type of splinting , or other modality, would be helpful to decrease your current pain. Good luck to you!
