i have a daughter born at 33wks, now home, gaining weight and doing well. i noticed when she's falling asleep in my arms or when drinking a bottle she sometimes blinks several times. no other movements. my ped is not concerned; i worry about seizures?

Accepted Answer

: It is hard to take a 33weeker home after the challenges you experienced. Most parents are not "normal" with things until the kid is at least a year old if not two. That said I don't find the events you describe worrisome. That is not a pattern I accept as a seizure equivalent in young infants.

i would like to find out what is causing my multipal symptoms? my sympomtoms are. feeling of getting shocked through out my body, feeling of my head spining a lot, numbness in my arms and legs, hard time falling asleep and staying asleep, pain in my eyes,

I : I can understand your frustration, as those symptoms sound very distressing.  As you have multiple ongoing symptoms, a complete medical evaluation is warranted.  Please seek out a physician.  It may help to take a list of your symptoms so that they can review it, along with your past medical history and any medications or supplements you are taking.

i'm 5'7 156lbs. every night i awake a couple hours after falling asleep with an elevated heart rate. when it happens my legs and arms feel cold and tingly. i have gerd and anxiety. went to er a few times, heart was fine, just elevated bp. what is it?

: A sleep related condition among others along with arrhythmias ( your BMI is normal otherwise) will have to be ruled out and the only way to have the right tests and proper follow up will be through your primary care doc or a cardiologist that can complete work up in a meaningful way. Avoid any stimulants during the day, caffeine, alcohol, supplements.

Sounds like...: This sounds like a hypnic jerk, which is nothing to be concerned about.  Typically these occur as you are transitioning from wake in to sleep.  
Be sure you are getting a normal amount of sleep nightly/regular sleep wake schedule, as that can often decrease the frequency of these.

Tight clothing?: Be careful with the clothing you wear to bed.  It appears that you are compressing your nerves under your armpit.  Pressing on these nerve bundle can cause loss of feeling, loss of the ability to use your arms and a "pins and needles" feeling.
Usually when you remove the pressure the feeling returns to your arms, sometime with a burning pain.
Seek help if this continunes.

should i be concerned if my legs and arms are falling asleep often?

It's not normal: Most commonly people's arms or legs "fall asleep" after they have been resting in a position that compresses the sensory nerves to the respective area(s).  If this is happening when your not in particular positions that are "squeezing" on your arms and/or legs, then follow up with your doctor.

Pinched nerves: If this problem has been happening for awhile i would suggest you seek help from a neurologist for nerve conduction studies to see where your nerves are being compressed.

Paresthesias: Tingling of the arms and hands can be something potentially serious. Compression in the cervical spine area from lifting, carrying bags, or injury can put pressure on the nerves radiating from the neck. The nerves beyond the pressure do not react normally and fire erratically causing the tingling or paresthesia. If it is short-lived/ resolves, monitor it. If it becomes more persistent md review.
