just started strenuous job. lot's of heavy lifting. next day, arms feel swollen (no pain) and hands fall asleep really easily. i have to keep my arms down to avoid hands falling asleep. hands also feel like i'm wearing thick gloves. what is this?

Edema: If you just started your job and have not done repetitive lifting before the swelling in your hands is primarily from exercising them.  Cool compress and NSAID may help. I would anticipate that as you continue to work your hands will get stronger and adapt to the regular activity.

Get examined: Sounds like u may have early carpal tunnel syndrome(pinching of  median nerve @wrist).Gripping and re-gripping the bar w/ wt.Lifting could be irritating the nerve.Do your hands hurt @night?See your physician for exam(best to come in right after u wt.Lift)..Good luck!

Posture: You may possess carpal tunnel syndrome, but could be compressing the ulnar nerve at the elbow.  Unlikely that this represents neck or shoulder issues, although possible.  Nerve conduction testing may provide answers.

Need eval: you need medical evaluation  for your complaints. I would start with evaluating your neck as I would be concerned there is something going on in your cervical spine that's causing some pressure on the spinal cord which could cause your symptoms. Neurology consult?: Occasionally sleeping on your back can put pressure on the ulnar crease ("funny bone") and compress the nerve causing discomfort in the area beyond.  If the bed is firm or if you have injuries involving those areas it may be more likely to occur.  Certainly neck nerve compression - often due to arthritis or injury - can cause a radiculopathy (tingling and pain).  Kinking your neck while reading?

Be seen: I would not hesitate to be seen.  There may be more than one condition contributing, or they may all be stemming from one systemic condition.  A nerve conduction test would probably be helpful in addition to being seen and examined.

Impingement: This appears to be a very positional symptom where full flexion of your arms results in impingement of nerves entering your hands and extension of arms relieves the impingement. Another possibility is a carpal tunnel syndrome, but I would expect hand tingling or numbness on other occasions as well. A hand surgeon or neurologist can evaluate and advise you if you still have concerns.

Lying on arms.: Probably b/c you are lying on your arm and partially cutting off the blood flow and nerve transmission to your hands. When you shift positions, you feel the numbness and tingling.

Ulnar nerve: The ulnar nerve supplying the little finger and half the ring finger can become compressed at the cubital tunnel along the medial elbow causing numbness. This is the most likely problem. Involvement of the middle finger raises questions. Seek care with a hand surgeon or neurologist.

This is normal: Different parts of the brain "fall asleep" at slightly different times.  This twitching, called myoclonus, is common upon falling asleep - it is related to the feeling of falling during sleep and waking with a "jerk".  If you watch an infant fall asleep, they often have slight jerking movements before they are fully asleep.  This is normal.
