Yes see a doctor: In the United states there is no over the counter medication available for bacterial vaginosis.  I am not sure if it is available in other countries.  First line medication would be flagyl or metronidazole.  It is better to see a doctor to be evaluated

BV requires Rx: There are several over-the-counter products for treating a yeast infection, but BV typically requires an antibiotic treatment that is a prescription.  This is also a situation where self-diagnosis may not work, so it's best to see a doctor, anyway.

No: You will need to tell your mom you are having symptoms--urinary / vaginal / other and need to see your dr. Then ask to be seen in private so you can discuss concerns w/dr. It will likely be wisest to discuss with your mom so you can be sure to have access to condoms (or birth control pills--but they do nothing to prevent stds, as you have learned).

Not effective: Many otc products that "promise to treat bacterial vaginosis" are not as effective as a rx from your gyn. The products just enhance the profitability of the company that makes them and can do harm with the irritating ingredients they contain.

RepHresh: Also probiotics.  Changes in the way we process food have decreased good bacteria which produce acid in the vagina to keep bad bacteria under control.  RepHresh is a gel placed in the vagina with a mild acid that will limit growth of bad bacteria.  Fastest method without a prescription  may be to insert plain yogurt into the vagina to get a high count of good bacteria.

also i have bv but cannot afford over the counter pills nor have insurance. is there any home remedies i can preform?

Probably expired : your birth control pills are probably expired. You can check the package usually a date is stamped on there. The treatment for bacterial vaginosis, metronidazole, is extremely inexpensive. It is four dollars at Walmart

No Embarrassment : Probiotics may be helpful: lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus rhamnosus, & streptococcus thermophilus . Also avoid douching. Always feel free to come in & see your provider, this is not something to feel shy about at all. Caring for whatever does not feel well to you is what we are here for & we respect all of your body & health. Rash, sore ear, pelvic infection, tummy ache-all deserve help!

Probiotics: Probiotics are something that you can try in order to change the ph of the vagina to encourage growth of lactobacilli.  Sometimes a woman needs a course of metronidazole, but definitely can try probiotics first.  Healthy diet, regular exercise and sleep as well.  Good luck!

Prevention: repHresh helps with prevention but for treatment you really need antibiotics which aren't available over the counter in this country. Sorry I can't be of more help
