Some staph species are more likely to cause infection, such as staphylococcus aureus. The infection is contagious, and can be spread by contact such as in locker rooms, gyms, or even the hospital. If the bacteria invade the blood stream that can cause sepsis, which is potentially very dangerous. Staph infections are treated with antibiotics, but antibiotic resistant staph species are increasingly becoming a problem in hospitals and in the community. One particularly notorious strain is methicillin resistant staph aureus (mrsa).
