i found out i was low on iron so im taking iron supplements, does that have something to do with bad kidneys? and why do i sleep so much better when im taking them? it used to be harder to sleep but now im finding it easier, how that that work?

: Iron deficiency is not related to kidney function. Iron intake is not generally related to sleep either.

Not related : Iron supplements are used to correct low red blood cells (anemia) that is specifically caused by iron deficiency. There is no relationship between having a late period and needing to take iron supplements.

Yes: And it can be fatal.  You do not need iron supplements unless you have been diagnosed with iron deficiency.

can you still be anemic while on iron supplements?

Accepted Answer

Yes.: Assuming that this is iron deficiency, a failure of the anemia to respond to iron can be related to a few things.  1) another cause for anemia, 2) ongoing bleeding (gi bleeding, period bleeding, etc), 3) not taking enough iron for a long enough time.  It takes a while to correct the iron deficiency.  This should be followed closely by your health care provider.

Oral iron: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, there seems to be a disconnect between serum iron and ferritin levels. If you are not anemic, continue taking iron supplement and repeat the test in 6-12 months.

why does my natures bounty iron supplements smell like vinegar? the target brand of iron i usually get never has any smell. the expiration date is 2023?

: Suggest you contact the store where purchased, and ask the local pharmacist if present, why there is an aroma to your supplements.  Alternatively, you could contact manufacturer via phone, email, or snail mail.

is it safe to take iron supplements while on an antibiotic?

Accepted Answer

Likely yes.: Unless you have excess iron in your body, like in a disease called hemochromatosis, it is likely to be no problem taking iron supplements.  In fact, a woman of your age should keep taking them to offset possible loss of iron with your menstrual cycle.

Accepted Answer

No: You only need an iron supplement if you have heavy periods or have been instructed by your doctor that you have iron deficiency anemia.
One benefit of birth control pills is that they usually make a woman's period lighter and/or shorter.  Also less cramping.

can you overdose on iron supplements when you have low ferritin? what is the optimal dose of iron to take to raise ferritin significantly?

Accepted Answer

No: The gut is very inefficient at absorbing iron. So you really cannot take too much.  Oral replacement takes several weeks.  In a more pressing circumstance your doc could offer IV iron.

should iron supplements be stopped while on coumadin (warfarin)?

Accepted Answer

No: There is no interaction between iron and warfarin.  You should only be on iron if you are iron deficient,  common causes of iron deficiency are gastrointestinal blood loss from colon polyps, inflammation, tumors or other problems.  Warfarin may increase the blood loss from any of these causes.  If you are iron deficient, the cause needs to be determined, especially for someone on warfarin.
