Anaphylactic Risk: Severe allergic- type rxns ( including fatal) associated with infusions (intravenous) Iron Dextran administration can occur.  Therefore should only be given when oral iron is not effective or possible.  Test does should be given and then rest given when lab-confirmed iron deficiency confirmed. Need to continue oral iron until iron stores are repleted--about 3 months. Very effective when used.

i'm taking 330 mg of ferrous fumarate, my ferritin is 4.4 and iron 26, i also have celiac and i heard that iron pills won't raise such low levels and that i may need an infusion, is that true?

: Celiac disease reduces absorption of oral iron. As you suggest, probably you need iron by infusion. It would be best to be in the care of both a gastroenterologist and hematologist. Good luck.

i was just diagnosed with anemia, after my annual physical.  my hgb level was 9, and ferritin level was 5. i am taking iron pills now.  should i get iron infusions instead?

Cause: You might. The question remains as to what us the cause for your iron deficient anemia and work up should help clarify that. You will be likely to be considered for infusions in case unable to tolerate by mouth or it is believed that you will not be able to absorb the iron.

: You have significant iron deficiency by those numbers. IV iron is NOT absolutely indicated unless you could not tolerate oral iron or ongoing blood loss is still present and you need a quick way to replete your iron storage with on going iron loss in case of moderate &amp; severe anemia. There are plenty of means for repleting iron orally by meds and high iron contained foods so IV iron is unnecessary

Iron pills side fx: G i upset is a frequent side effect of oral iron.U might try and reduce the dose or hold the pills altogether for a few days and see if these symptoms resolve.If so , then resume at a lower daily dose.Always inform your perscribing doctor of any side effects or medicine changes.

Some do: Some iron pills have a bitter taste. Others have a coating that acts as a barrier between the bad-tasting part of the pill and your taste buds. These are typically labelled as "enteric coated" or "delayed release". Iron in the form of a gel capsule also doesn't have a bad taste.
