Counseling: Cannot explain why you are having anxiety, but no reason to delay dealing with it.  I believe a therapist would be far more helpful than using medication.  A psychiatrist, psychologist, or even a social worker, can assist you.

oral bc for one year.  have pcos.  brown spotting all month, now on 6 day of a medium period.  is this concerning.  i have anxiety surrounding cancer and am terrified this means i have some gynelogical cancer.  started new pack of bc today?

Bleeding on bcp's ?: The treatment with oral bcp's is appropriate for PCOS.  Bleeding (or "brown spotting") on low dose oral bcp's is usually from not being punctual about taking the active pills. Make certain you take the active pills within the same hour of taking the prior day's active pill. Cancer is highly unlikely from a uterine source at age 37, but see your gyn physician if bleeding continues.

GO TO ER If: if you are obese or sedentary, have new onset calf pain with redness/swelling /pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, anxiety, bluish skin.  These could be signs not  of cancer but a clot traveling from leg to lung which is a pulmonary embolism. Life  threatening. Please seek medical attention immediately. You  are describing classic signs. Better safe than sorry.Take care

Therapy: The American Cancer Society, check on line or your local hospital. Most local hospitals have supports groups If you live near a University that has a Medical School, they probably have a dept of psychiatry/psychology where therapy is offered on a sliding scale fee. Their dept of Oncology may offer services free of charge.

See doctor: If your anxiety is troublesome enough for you to write, it would be prudent to see a psychiatrist as you may need a combination of counselling and medication. Counter-intuitive as it may seem exercise will help. Try starting your day with 30 minutes of exercise each day. Wish you good health!

Different types: So many cancers - they don't share symptoms except for very generally if at all. A basic full exam w/ blood work and other basic labs would raise flags for deeper work - if there's no flag - you can relax. This is especially true for young healthy folk. Unexpected weight loss and internal bleeding, lumps or moles that are unusual, sore throat, etc. that lasts long w/ dry coughing may alert you.

Sometimes: Anxiety is sometimes associated with malignancy.  This is typified by many patients with pancreatic cancer who complain of such symptoms and sent for psychiatric evaluation only to find they have metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Anxiety meds: Please talk w/your family doctor.  There are meds not linked to cancer.  You concern about that may be due to your anxiety.   A clinical psychologist can teach you ways to manage your anxiety behaviorally; a psychiatrist is an expert on psych meds.  Peace and good health.

Patients : Patients who have been diagnoses with cancer are typically referred to a multi-disciplinary team for management of his disease.  Make contact with this team and discuss your concerns.  They will be able to give you about the disease, treatment options, and prognosis.  If psychiatric counseling is required, and many times it is, you will be referred to an appropriate source of care.

Yes.: Yes.  If you do not have access to skilled psychological care, read a book on CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), which will give you pointers in how to overcome this.
