Depends why elevated: This depends on why you have an elevated ANA. It can be there for lots of reasons. Classically we use this to diagnose systemic lupus erythematosus but most people with a positive ANA do not have systemic lupus erythematosus. As a rheumatologist we are asked to see a lot of people with a positive ANA Most of the time we find some other cause. Yours is high but it may not be high for any bad reason

Any symptoms?: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, if this is the only abnormality, it is not to be concerned about.

Yes: I cannot fully answer the reason as to why this occurs but I have seen it in my practice in patients whom I have followed for several years who have hives.

A general screen..: A general screen for certain autimmune diseases.  However, my favorite referral is a patient with a positive ana.  I can tell most on revisit that it is a false positive. 5% off th population has a positive ana. Only 1/100 have an autoimune disease, associated with a positive ana.

? celiac disease: Get checked for celiac disease. There has been a report linking this disorder with chronic hives.

No caffeine 24 hrs: Among other things to withhold, caffeine is probably the most important as it negates the effect of adenosine, preventing any stress.  Other common things are don't eat for at least 4 hours prior to the test, no chocolate, stop some medications.  Call the testing office for their specific protocol.

Depends: At one of the centers I work at, the results come back in an hour or two.  However this is at a designated center.  Most are read no more than 24 hours.
