Not helpful: Topical antibiotics will not penetrate a stye.  The best treatment for a stye is very warm compresses applied for 5 minutes every 2-3 hours while awake.  This almost always gets rid of them.

Warm Compresses: A stye, or chalazion, is an obstructed or infected oil gland of the eyelid. Use of warm compresses (a wash rag soaked in warm water) held over the closed eye for 10 minutes a few times a day will usually help the stye to resolve. Sometimes antibiotic eye ointment and less commonly oral antibiotics can help as well. If the stye has been there chronically (months), surgical drainage may be needed.

taking  bacitracin ophthalmic ointment for a stye. what are normal side effects? my eye gets slightly irritated/itchy is that normal?

Not effective: Bacitracin, a good antibiotic for open skin wounds, will not penetrate into a stye which is a closed system.  The best treatment is frequent applications of very warm (not hot) pads or washcloth for 4 minutes about 5 times per day.  Although very uncommon, you could develop an allergy to Bacitracin as well.

Needs consultation: Any child with a persistent stye or chalazion needs a consultation with an ophthalmologist to determine the underlying reason.  "styes" generally develop in response to chronic eyelid gland inflammation.  Treatment is aimed at not only treating the stye but preventing future problems as well.  In extreme cases, styes may develop into cellulitis or skin infection requiring more intense treatment.

i am on a topical antibiotic for my eye. i have now developed 2 styes, same eye. the stye on my lower lid has a swollen pouch under it, what is it?

Compress: Try to use warm compress and don't touch ur eye without washing your hands. Keep using topical antibiotics, if doing this for 48 hours doesn't show any improvement or if it is getting worse then see a doc.

i have blepharitis, i take good care of my lids. i am on an oral antibiotic, sinus, and a topical 4 eye. using both 4 a week, and yet developed 2 stye?

Blepharitis problem: For many, blepharitis is best described as chronically recurrent. It may only be possible to control, not fully cure. There may be an oil gland dysfunction like roseacea involved. Using oral antibiotics like Minocycline can thin oil secretions, as do omega-3 supplements. Warm compresses, lid hygeine, eye ointments, Azasite to the lid can all help control bleph and prevent complications like styes.

i am having frequent eye styes in both eyes every month also having eye allergy from 10 years. using antibiotic. what is the permanent solution for it?

Eye doctor + Allergist: you need both, frequent styes could be related to allergies, but we need to make sure first you have the right sight / corrective lenses, and free from any other eye disease, as for the allergist, would make sure as well you truly have allergies, identify the offending agents, gives you the right allergy medicine, possibly starts you on specific  immunotherapy, good luck

im taking cephalexin for internal eye stye. i seem to now have acquired a sinus infection. will i need yet another antibiotic? or will the cephalexin help both conditions.

Sinus symptoms: Most sinus congestion problems and drainage are due to viral infections or allergy, neither of which is helped by any antibiotic. But if you do have a bacterial sinus infection, cephalexin usually would work, but not necessarily. Check back with your doctor if the sinus symptoms continue for a few days while taking cephalexin. And maybe add a nasal saline spray.

my 3 year old son keeps getting recurring eye infections that look like a sty, it forms a big puss filled head.this is now the 4th one within 2 months, they clear up and then another one starts. do we need an antibiotic ointment to treat it?

Accepted Answer

: This can be difficult. Simple sty's will often resolve with warm compresses. When they are recurrent like this, the kid is often harboring an invasive staph germ in their nasal passages or skin that may require treatment. Bathing in water with a cup of bleach added (1cup/20 gallons) can reduce staph on the skin.  I would confer with the kids doc about treatment options.
