Why: Why would you want to numb your vagina? If you are having vaginal pain with intercourse you might want to try using some extra lube. You should definitely try to find out why you are having pain if you don't know.

Yes: Lidocaine should work but most important aspect to avoiding pain during intercourse is lubrication (typically foreplay or touching).  Also, make sure you are in control of the depth of penetration so that if it's painful, you can stop. Often best managed by you being on top. If you want to use cream, then apply to outside of vulva. I don't recommend creams as can cause infection of vagina.

Acetaminophen products given orally may help. Part of the kids fussiness could be their surprise that they received the injections. It will pass shortly.

If you are diabetic or are possibly diabetic then you could be dealing with a neuropathy (nerve damage) this causes burning and pain usually in the feet and legs. If this is the case your doctor can prescibe medication that will help ease this type of pain.
