Talk to doctor : It is great to see this involvement.  You are doing a wonderful thing by learning about it.  For the surgery ask to meet the anesthesiologist.  Most prefer a pediatric anesthesiologist but not everyone.  A children's hospital setting may be needed for the operation.  Talk about what will occur.  Talk about the risks.  Bring a family member.

ASK THEM!: ALWAYS double check and ask questions on how  and how much general anesthesia your child will receive for the dental work.  Will it be at the hospital or at the office?  Is it a general dentist with a dental anesthesiologist?  If just a dentist, are they certified in sedation and GA?  Also, be sure to mention and repeat if your child has any allergies to anything.  good luck!

Slightly more: But either way the risk is extremely small.  It's like asking if lightning is more likely to strike your house next week or the next two weeks.  Twice the risk, right?  But still near zero either way.

Local is safer: It's always safer to have a procedure done with local anesthesia rather than general anesthesia if possible. There is always higher risk of cardiac and pulmonary complications when having general anesthesia.

Aging: Generally, the risk would be with increased age due to higher likelihood of disease, but there may be  an additive deleterious effect with multiple anesthetics.

Being asleep: A general anesthetic is similar to falling asleep. Once anesthesia is induced, the patient is no longer aware of what is happening in his/her environment. The body responds physiologically as it normally would. The anesthesia provider is there to monitor and control those reponses. Once the patient is awake again he/she will drowsy and tired for a while.
