Anesthesia: She may have pseudocholinesterase deficiency which can be hereditary by autosomal recessive genetics. This enzyme metabolizes muscle relaxants such as succinylcholine (anectine) &amp; mivacurium.  When deficient in the enzyme the muscle relaxants are very slowly metabolized &amp; the patient will be very weak for prolonged periods. You should be tested for this disorder and tell your anesthesiologist.

Maybe: I am not aware of this.  Etomidate comes in a 35% solution with propylene glycol which might give a false positive depending on the assay method, but this would not last long, would not likely be high and there would not likely be any concern of etoh intake around the time of etomidate or succ use.

Important: I don't think you have a family "allergy" as much as a deficiency in the enzyme that breaks down succinylcholine, (pseudocholinesterase) which can occur quite commonly.  It is IMPERATIVE that you tell your anesthesia provider this information.  They can either use an alternative drug, or use succinylcholine and know that it would work longer.  You can be tested to know if you have this problem.

Don't try at home.: Sux is a rapid acting short duration paralytic agent. Patient remains conscious but cannot move or breathe. Somewhat inhumane to use it without other agents.

Succinylcholine: Yes, succinylcholine without proper supervision and airway support can be deadly.  Succinylcholine causes a temporary irreversibel binding of your muscles that relax the muscles including the respiratory muscles and can lead to death by lack of oxygen if a proper airway is not established and the patient is not supported with assisted breathing, it lasts 6-8 minutes but is very potent.

Reaction to sux: In terms of allergy in the usual sense, it may not exist with succinylcholine.  My top concern would be an adverse intrinsic response to exposure to this drug, called malignant hyperthermia.  This is life threatening if not immediately recognized, there is genetic predisposition(family history).  Other conditions preclude use of this drug too, renal failure, certain neurologic conditions also.
