Depends upon "bug": Also upon which meds you can take. But, antibiotics are the only sure way of eliminating a UTI in spite of unscientific claims of herbalists and naturopaths. However drinking lots of water and urinating evry couple of hours can help to get rid of a UTI sooner. Taking sodium bicarbonate , in tablet form or in a drink, will reduce urinary acidity & help to relieve symptom of burning.

Not reliable: If you have had a positive urine culture for a bacteria known to be senstivie to amoxicillin, it will work very well. However, many bacteria that cause UTI are resistant to it, and amoxicillin should not be used for UTI's if testing hasn't been done. Definitely do not treat yourself with leftover amoxicillin. Discuss with your doctor and follow her advice.

Don't take it: Up to half the bacteria that cause UTI are not susceptible to amoxicillin/clavulanate, so it's very chancy. And if it doesn't work, it could make  later diagnosis more difficult. Contact your doctor, who may not need to see you, maybe prescribe by phone if your symptoms are typical. In meantime, drink lots of fluids and maybe try phenazopyridine (e.g Azo®) to help symptoms.
