i'm on amitriptyline(10mg)@night for vulvodynia. it's been 3 weeks and i noticed tonight i'm very emotional and crying a lot. could it be too strong?

Unlikely: Amitriptyline is a tricyclic anti-depressant, that is sometimes used at low doses to treat pain smptoms, like urs. Though 10mg is a very small dose, and thus the med is unlikely to b effective as an anti-depressant at that dose, its even less likely 4 it 2 cause depression, mood lability,or crying. because everyone is different, always discuss ur meds &amp; any new symptoms with your doctor.

Vuvodyinia: I would see a doctor or clinic that specializes in comprehensive vulvodynia treatment.  The use of vaginal dilators is often helpful, but there is no one product that works for everyone.

Yes, but...: Yes, it may be prescribed just as a sleep aid, but there are many better choices.  Melatonin, Trazodone, Benadryl are safe alternatives. Restoril, Ambien, and Sonata (zaleplon) are alternatives as well but are riskier given potential for abuse, withdrawal, dependence, and daytime sedation the following day.

Side effects such as sleepiness, dry eyes, dry mouth, and constipation may occur. Side effects tend to be less if the medication is started at a low dose and gradually increased (titrated).

Elavil (amitriptyline): can be weened over a period of a few weeks at this dose. 
Be sure to discuss this with your prescribing doctor. If you have it in tablet form you can break it into quarters and take away one quarter every 5 days. Consider replacing it with Pamelor (nortriptyline) which is less anticholinergic (dry mouth blurred vision etc)

Ami side effects: Not unusual but can be circumvented by using the lowest effective dose - 2.5 - 10 mg.  The dose is individualised based on med sensitiviy, family history of success (and the effective dosage), type of illness being treated, comorbid medical and emotional disease, anticipated side effects and potential/ currently existing interactions with other medications/supplements.

can i take diurex while on amitriptyline?

Yes, but be cautious: Diurex is caffeine and magnesium salicylate. As such it will have the stimulating properties of caffeine including nervousness, tachycardia, insomnia and jitteriness. Salicylate may cause ringing in the ears and GI irritation. Amitriptyline is an antidepressant which can cause sedation, constipation,  urinary retention and changes in heart rhythm. There are no reported drug interactions.

Typical Tricyclic SE: And they are dose dependent. The higher the dose, the more likely the side effects are to occur. Your body should adjust to the side effects even at a higher dosage. Common side effects are: sedation, dry mouth, dizziness, constipation, blurry vision, increased appetite and more. Uncommon side effects can include abnormal heart rhythm, abnormal electrolytes confusion etc.
