i have pain,  numbness on r/s  of my face .  neurologist tested for all obvious causes,  concluded it is  stress related.  i have been on amitriptyline 75mg for 2 months with no results.  advice?

Can be other reasons: Amitriptyline should have impact on depression and neuropathic pain, perhaps need re-evaluation for atypical facial pain or trigeminal neuralgia. Need to discuss with your primary care physician.

amitriptyline safe and effective for preventing hemiplegic migraines? i get slight numbness and tingling left side and headaches. past 2yrs on and off

It could.: Discuss this with your doc and see if it is a good choice for you.  It can be used to decrease frequency and severity of headaches, and also helps with chronic pain in some people.

i have multiple sclerosis and am taking elavil 50 mg. i don't notice a difference in my numbness is this a high enough dose? i also take cymbslta 60

Accepted Answer

Yes/no: Individuals can be on hundreds of milligrams of amitriptyline per day; however, side effects are more likely.  I have some patients that can tolerate more than 10mg per day while some take 200mg per day without any problems.

i'm allergic to tetracycline. would that be similar to tricyclics? taking amitriptyline for 2 wks. noticed red raw tongue few days ago. allergic?

Very different meds: There is no cross allergic sensitivity to tricyclics in presence of tetracycline allergy, but i cannot conclude that your "red raw tongue" is unrelated.  See your doctor asap, and get this checked out and start therapy or change meds, if needed.

endep (amitriptyline) that i take for anxiety, causes my tongue to burn and makes swallowing difficult. any better alternative for anxiety?

Yes: Originally this was intended for major depression. There are many alternatives but you need to work w/ your doctor to find a good one for you. Discuss in detail what benefits and risks each may have AND add CBT therapy to optimize any choice. It does!

what causes involuntary jaw shutting and teeth banging together ? also bite my tongue and mouth a lot accidentally ? i assumed it was caused by amitriptyline so came off it but still happening throughout day ?

: This could still be a side effect of amitriptyline. It could also be a variant of temporomandibular joint dysfunction. I'd give it a little more time before consulting an oral surgeon as the amitriptyline side effect may wear off.

Tongue paresthesia: Numbness, tingling sensation, and other symptoms involving the tongue are not uncommon side effects of amytriptiline (elavil). Keep in mind that combination of headache and tongue numbness may be due to a linked and more serious neurological condition and not necessarily be from the amytriptiline.

Need exam: I can't tell you why you are having  numbness  in your mouth. There are many  possible reasons for this.  This best thing to do is to sea dentist or oral surgeon for an exam.

See DDS first: See your dentist to rule out any obvious dental pathology, if negative your primary care 
MD may refer you to a neurologist for further investigation.
