Calories: I don't think a small dose of amitriptyline would be a primary cause of weight gain. You're correct in feeling that calories are a key to losing weight. You have to reduce daily calories by 500 for a week  to lose one pound. Misinformed?: Drugs do not cause weight gain. Eating more than normal causes weight gain.  Both of these drugs are known to cause some patients to feel more hungry than normal.  If I had to guess then Amitryptiline is more likely than sertraline. But that is not 100% valid.

Many medications: Have recommended doses. Taking more than that dose could be an overdose. Taking less than that dose could be ineffective.  Some people gain weight with Effexor (venlafaxine) and some people lose weight. Some have no significant change in their weight. Research suggests that weight gain appears to be dose related.

Weight gain may be: associated with antidepressants like amitryptiline especially if your depression was associated with loss of appetite and weight. Amitriptylene: Amitriptylene is not an "addictive" medication.  It does not induce tolerance as benzodiazepines like xanax, (alprazolam) etc, can.  In some people it can increase appetite, leading to weight gain.  However, you are on a very low (20mg) dose, so this is less likely.  Also you are forewarned and can now increase exercise and eat more healthily so you avoid even that potential issue.  Good luck to you!

Unlikely, but...: Sometimes, it can be hard to tell if a woman is pregnant because some of the symptoms seen in early pregnancy can also happen in non-pregnant women. A urine pregnancy test gives a reliable result if done correctly, about 3 weeks after sex (3 weeks after when conception might have occurred), or 1 week after missing a period. An Ob-Gyn doctor can evaluate any persistent or worrisome symptoms.

Mirtazapine: Mirtazapine frequently causes weight gain, Elavil also can increase appetite, Lyrica (pregabalin) can also contribute. Discuss this with your treating physician.
