i am on a low dose of tramadol. 50-100mg per day. is it still safe to have alcohol ? just stopped taking amitriptyline last week. 10mg per day.

Not recommended: Tramadol and alcohol are depressant of the central nervous system. Mixing tramadol with alcohol could lead to drowsiness to severe depression of brain activity, coma, and ultimately death. Tramadol has a prolonged half-life about 7 hours. It is still in your system for at least 10 hours. Is not recommended.

Not recommended: It is not recommended to drink alcohol when taking medications, including Elavil/amitriptyline. The liver is responsible for metabolizing both alcohol and medications, adding additional burden especially in those with medical problems. If taken as an anti-depressant, the goals of treatment with Elavil are being undone by drinking alcohol, which is by definition a nervous system depressant.

a year ago, my sgpt was 21 iu/l, now it is 105 iu/l (reference 0-65). what can possibly raise it this way? i am underweight, rarely drink alcohol, hypertensive on meds, with normal recent lipid profile, on amitriptyline, sertraline, and a benzo?

: It would not be unusual to see such a transient raise in this liver marker during and after a common viral infection. Many simple viruses affect the internal organs that way but do not create enough of a long term problem to be considered worrisome. Retesting in a few weeks can see if it is settling down as expected.

Please be careful...: You should be ok from a physical standpoint - one standard drink takes about 2 hours to metabolize; However, it is strongly recommended to avoid alcohol while taking amytriptyline, as the combination can increase drowsiness (putting you or others at risk for injury) and alcohol can reduce the effectiveness of the medication.  If necessary, please be sure to get a sober ride from someone you trust.

Alcohol insomnia: Yes alcohol can cause insomnia, especially as it wears off. You can get a rebound effect. Also some people get paradoxical reactions. So where a substance can relax many people, there are some people who become more anxious. And you are taking prescribed medication that could be interacting. You should speak to your prescribing doctor who will probably advise you not to drink alcohol.

Go see your doctor!: Australia's endep (amitriptyline) is sold in states as Elavil brand of Amitriptyline which is an early antidepressant w/anticholinergic properties, causing dry eyes & mouth, constipation, inability to urinate & confusion. None: 10mg is smallest pill available for Amitriptyline which is an antidepressant. Tapering off any medication under physician supervision should not lead to "side effects" but original symptoms that led to prescription may return. So stay in close contact w/your prescribing physician just in case you need to restart medication.

: Very low dose, but you do not provide reasons for use, and so, it is best to contact your doctor regarding the ongoing future need.  Also, stopping any medication should be a joint decision.
