: Gardnerella itself is not abnormal in the vagina. It is useful for diagnosis because it grows to increased amounts in bacterial vaginosis, but so do many other vaginal bacteria; G. vaginalis is not itself the cause. The treatment of choice is metronidazole by mouth, not vaginally. If the clindamycin doesn't work, stop all treatment and see a gyn who specializes in infectious diseases. Good luck.

: No, G. vaginalis only causes vaginitis. Oral treatment is simpler than local gel but side effects are more common.

i was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis about 2 years ago. i've taken doxycycline first then metronidazole. doxycycline reduced discharge but it came back after sometime. metronidazole-no effects. i'd like to know if there's alternative treatment?

: In view of no effect by metro. and poor by doxy- I would suggest an exam by a Gyn to see for any local problem and to also re-culture the area In the meantime keeping the area clean, using a condom and trying a OTC boric acid product

Not if it is realy B: Bv  acidolphilus will help prevent it, but it should be treated with anti-biotic gel or supp or antibiotic pills.

Bacterial vaginosis : Bacterial vaginosis is usually treated with wide spectrum antibiotics.  See your gyn physician for an exam and culture. Remember, however, if a partner has other sexual contacts, the chances of re-infection are significant.

Antibiotics or boric: Metronidazole pills, or Metronidazole gel (for vaginal treatment) are first line treatments.  Clindamycin is another effective antibiotic that comes in oral or vaginal preparations. Boric acid is a very effective treatment (vaginal use only).  Sometimes taking a probiotic, or acidophilus can keep the vaginal ph in a range to prevent recurrences of yeast or BV infections.

2-3 days: When a woman has a bacterial vaginosis infection and starts an antibiotic it usually takes 2-3 days for her to start feeling better.  But take the whole treatment!  otherwise there is more chance of the infection coming back.
