2nd opinion: Symptoms and concerns like these mandate a thorough evaluation by your doctor.  Only after such an evaluation, which may include labs and radiographic examinations, can he/she let you know what's going on and how best to help you.

since being prescribed prednisone in 30mg (6x5mg) daily dosage for severe eczema treatment, i seem to be experiencing diarrhoea. is this normal?

my hands are breaking out in eczema and is covered in sores and blisters. i think it is stress and anxiety related. i was on prednisone for 2 weeks, and it was almost healed. now i have run out of pills and it's is getting worst daily?

: You may try a cortisone cream available over the counter. You should also look into factors that may be making matters worse. Avoid exposure to plant products that may cause irritant dermatitis.

Either: Or chemical irritation from something you're putting on your skin.   Or something else entirely.  Rashes can't be diagnosed accurately without actually being seen.  See your doctor, and if it doesn't get better, see a dermatologist.

Hand rashes: This severe persistent itchy rash involving both hands may be eczema or allergic response to something external coming in contact with the backs of the hands and fingers or to something internal such as a food. If you're not being treated by a dermatologist, consult one. If you're seeing one already then I recommend consulting one at the department of dermatology at a university hospital.

what are some alternatives to prednisone for crohn's?

Many.: If in the small intestine, sulfasalazine. Colon: pentasa, proctofoam. Azothioprine, cyclosporine, the antibiotics ciprofloxine with or without metronidazole.  Any finally most of the tnf-alpha inhibitors. Remicade, humira, cimzia, (certolizumab pegol) etc.  I did not mention prednisone, or a poorly absorbed GI oral steroid.

RA: If you have confirmed diagnosis of RA, then you should be on disease modifying drugs as deemed necessary by your rheumatologist. These prevent flares and disabling changes in the joints.

Prednisone sub: In the steroid category, there is cortisone, hydrocortisone, decadron, and medrol.  In the non-steroid category, there is ibuprofen, aleve, mobic, (meloxicam) naprosyn, celebrex.

Depends: This depends on what the Prednisone is for.  In certain inflammatory cases Prednisone is necessary - but hopefully temporarily.  Although ribes nigrum has some steroid properties, it is not nearly as powerful.  Have you adressed the root cause of inflammation: dietary allergens, omega-3, probiotics, nutrients (vitamin c, d, a, zinc...)?  Find the root cause and then won't need the prednisone.

what do you think about the use of methotrexate to treat sarcoidosis and what are the alternatives besides prednisone?

Accepted Answer

Can be effective: Methotrexate can be effective for long term control of sarcoidosis symptoms.  Complicated though, requires baseline labs and chest x-ray then regular monitoring of  cbc, liver and kidney function.  The care should be overseen by rheumatologist and pcm familiar with potential side effects and drug interactions.  Much less $$ than other immunomodulating meds.   Prednisone still required sometimes.
