Switch : I'd suggest switching your laundry detergent ... Try Dreft (it's actually baby detergent so it's hypoallergenic).  Hope that helps!

Unscented Products: Anything unscented would work well. There are a number of products on the market. Downy Free and Sensitive, Attitude Baby Fabric Softener, Martha Stewart Clean, Snuggle Free Clear. Most are labels Free and Clear or Free and Sensitive.

Usually later: Allergies can be either immediate or appear later.  For chemical exposures like detergents and softeners, the daily exposure on clothes  can build and the allergy appear after months of using it. The body gets sensitized over time.

First get tested: Fabric softener is a rather complex substance.  There can be a number of things in it that can cause a contact dermatitis.  I would suggest you see an allergist or dermatologist for patch testing to see if the particular chemical in your fabric softener can be identified.

That is possible.: If you have switched to new brands and have been experiencing irritation , switch back or eliminate  them one by one to see what caused the problem. If the irritation is still there for this long, have your doctor help you figure it out since chronic irritation can be a sign of other skin disorders or infection.

Depends: If you wash then rinse several times it should remove residual soaps from the fabric. It can take several rinse cycles to be effective enough for a truly allergic persons.

Rash: If a patient is allergic to a detergent (laundry or dish washing) then there is usually some sort of rash, redness, itching or other symptom that there is some irritation present. Seeing a dermatologist will help you determine what is going on.

Dermatologist helps: Bumps may be conditions such as allergic reactions, eczema, comedones, folliculitis, etc... Each would have a different treatment, so a primary care doctor, a dermatologist, or an allergist can evaluate and help. Rashes are hard to describe in words. Little white heads are more likely folliculitis. If quite itchy, an allergic reaction is more likely.

Dry skin: In the winter months, the first thing I consider would be dry skin. Try using unscented soap and apply a skin moisturizer all over within 3 minutes after bathing to see it this helps . It may take a few days for the skin to calm down. If problem persists, then need to consult a dermatologist or allergist.
