It depends: Surgical steel, in most cases, is not associated with allergy. If you have never had problems with any metals on your skin (jewelry, watches, belt buckles, piercings), you have nothing to worry about. If you did, there is a test called patch testing that can be performed by a board-certified allergist immunologist which can help. Blood tests are of questionable value.

Nickel allergy: Most surgical steel allergy is to the nickel alloy.  Avoid any nickel alloy plating.  Yellow gold is usually safe, but avoid silver.  Platinum may also be safe but check with the jeweler and ask for the purity of all metals purchased.

No: It might help reduce some of the pollens, dusts and irritants that you are inhaling, but it's imperfect, and you can get exposed through your eyes as well. If you feel better using it, by all means do so, but i wouldn't rely on it to prevent all symptoms.

Several options: There are several options available for surgical skin prep. Many surgeons have actually moved away from iodine based preps to a combination of alcohol and chlorhexidene. Just make sure you tell your surgeon and the or nurses about your allergy.

had a lumpectomy 2 days ago now i'm burned badly from the surgical tape. what do you advise?

Accepted Answer

Allergic reaction: You are probably allergic to the tape's adhesive; it's a little early at day #2 to be an infection.  Remove tape, cool compresses; if your surgeon okay's it & reaction is very severe, mild cortisone topically may settle this faster.

Metal allergy: It's pretty rare to be allergic to all metals. Skin testing for metal allergies is inconsistent and does not determine implantable metal allergies. Blood tests can be done to test for metal allergy prior to the procedure.

Extremely unlikely: It is extremely rare to be allergic to the lens material of modern intraocular lenses. Inflammatory precipitates which deposit on the lenses are usually secondary to other causes of inflammation and not the material itself.
