As : As an expert who works in one of the only three (3) certified podiatry centers in the state of washington who provide pinpointe laser therapy for the treatment of toenail fungus, it is safe to say that it does work. The success rate is about 80%. What you will need is probably 2-3 treatments spaced out in 1 year.

Fungus B Gone: Try tea tree oil 1-2 x daily under nail or Vicks vaporub at night. Dr. Haley suggests otc urea cream to soften the nail. May take 2-4 months before you notice normal nail by your cuticle. Treatment applied to your nail often doesn't work as well as prescription pills. Your toenail must be tested for fungus before pills can be prescribed. Also, treat any lurking athlete's foot. Slow going.

Topical or systemic: There are many otc antifungal medications on the pharmacy shelf. In my experience they all take a long time and do not work very well.
I have patients use vick's vaporub on the nail and am having good luck with this treatment.  They use it every day.

There are 2 prescription medications on the market, Lamisil (terbinafine) and sporonox.  They can take their toll on the liver, discus this with your doctor.

I've heard it all: People have tried everything - vinegar, dilute bleach, listerine, otc antifungal solutions. These are all antiseptics, but this problem is very difficult. Nail needs to be thoroughly cut/filed back and thinned.  Get a good antifungal solution. Treat shoes with lysol. Be consistent and keep the nail filed smooth as it grows out. Dry feet well always. Can take 6 months. Treat skin if athlete's foot.
