COPD?: She may have copd. Cxr and pfts are very useful. Most patients need anti inflammatory medications such as inhaled steroids. Spiriva is often quite useful also. Albuterol dilates the airways but does not treat the underlying inflammation. Have her checked by a lung doc.

Need maintenance: It sounds like you are using your inhaler a lot. Would definitely recommend that you discuss with your doc. You would definitely benefit from a maintenance inhaler, if you are not on one, some time short steroid tapers are needed. Workup is sometimes also needed for conditions that may exacerbate your asthma. Do not postpone looking  for help.

See below: First off post viral coughs can last up to 3 weeks. Next albuterol is not a "cold" medication but rather a reliever medication for asthma.  As colds are a major trigger point for an asthma exacerbation it is frequently prescribed. You should check with your doctor on this as your son made need additional or alternative therapies.

There are 2 other inhalers on the market similar to albuterol called xopenex (levalbuterol) & Maxair (pirbuterol). These are all rescue inhalers that provide quick-onset dilation of the bronchial tubes.
