could someone please tell me about aids dementia?

Clarification needed: Aids is someone who have advanced diseases of HIV positive individuals with worsening of symptoms, including dementia. Any change of personality, memory loss or/and loss of functional activity such as bathing, dressing result hiv-related dementia. The new onset of dementia varies by age and the severity of HIV related symptoms. To my knowledge there is no term for aids dementia.

Possiblly- or not: Hiv dementia is less prevelent now with current HIV medications but is still noted.
Treatment(meds), mood, and a complete work-up is needed. 
This should include  neuro-psychological testing- which is even more helpful if obtained at diagnosis for comparison but not often done these days.
Neurological evaluation along with infectious disease re-evaluation.

At times: Antipsychotics are not the first line treatment of dementia...Having said that...At times they are effective.

Antiretroviral tx: Most antivirals have side effects and they are expensive and pts need to take too many pills. They may interact with other medications. If the pt with dementia enters into a hospice program they may question the issue to continue or not with the retrovirals anti HIV meds. Discontinuation of anti HIV meds will provoke multiplication of the virus and advancement towards aids.

41 yo healthy female. i've taken clonazapam for anxiety, .5 mg 1 to 2 times per day off and on for a year and a half. how many years would i have to be on this medication for it to put me at high risk for dementia?

: "Clonazapam" use for even two weeks continuously can lead to addiction, and longer term (period varies with the patient) is associated with onset of Alzheimer's disease .  Ask your prescribing physician about other anxiety medications.

For symptom relief: Anyone of any age who has dementia can suffer from fearfulness, paranoia, hallucinations, delusions and other psychotic symptoms. Antipsychotic medications can be the most effective way to minimize or eliminate these symptoms and the suffering they cause. Use of any medication for any illness should be preceded by a discussion of risks and benefits.

i'm supposed to take prometrium (micronized progesterone) on day 12-16 200mg twice a day, is this medication completely safe and does it cause dementia? i'm ttc but unsure

Prometrium (micronized progesterone): No medication is "completely safe."  Every action we take in life has risks and benefits. Dementia is not one of the concerns from Prometrium (micronized progesterone) so I am not sure where you got that. It is an extremely  commonly used medication that is very standard. You will have to decide if your desire to conceive outweighs  your fear of medication

i have taken hydroxyzine for many years because of anxieties. my allergy doctor tells me that, in the long run, of a lifetime, this medication will cause dementia. what is your opinion?

Accepted Answer

: Numerous medications have anti-cholinergic side effects.  If you  had  Alzheimer's, these effects could add to cognitive symptoms.  BUT this is not the underlying cause of dementia, and there is NO  evidence that hydroxyzine results in permanent brain damage.  Stopping the drug would reverse all neurotransmitter changes due to the drug.

hi i would like to know that if there is a link between bipolar disorder and dementia or alzheimer disease? if a person had start level of bd and took medications regularly, is there a chance to have more disorders and diseases other than bd?

Co-morbidity:  History of Bipolar Disorder increases risk for dementia later in life.  REF:  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5365367/ A person can have comorbid psychiatric conditions with or without treatment. I am not sure about specifics with Alzheimer;s (which is a form of dementia) &amp; bipolar disorder.
