i quit smoking. will the hoarseness in my voice go away in time?

Usually but depends: on what damage the smoking has already done. In some smokers, the vocal cords become scarred or develop nodules and hoarseness may persist.  Most of the time it is chronic inflammation and this heals, with time. It will also depend on how long and how much you smoked, what kind of cigarettes, and your own biology and predisposition to smoking-related damage. Congratulations and stay quit!!!

Dysphonia: Yes, absolutely. It will cause vocal cord irritation and swelling as well as trauma due to cough and most importantly, will significantly increase your risk for laryngeal cancer.

It is not unusual to have some symptoms like this after you quit, but these could also be symptoms of a viral or bacterial infection on your throat. Nerve problem: During parathyroidectomy, there is risk to the nerve that controls the voice.  It can suffer temporary or permanent injury.  This will alter the sound of the voice as well as the effort required to make the sound.  See a laryngologist for an examination and the best advice.  Most of us will treat the voice and then watch you.  After a year, don't expect function to return to normal.

See your ENT: It is highly unlikely that you have cancer at your age.  Also voice box cancers tend to have progressive hoarseness that doesn't get better with steroids.  However, recurrent hoarseness is not normal and should be evaluate.

: What tests would you get done? If you had acid reflux, that can damage the vocal cords and it may take longer than you like for the damage to recover. If you are improving, it would be prudent to wait. If you are overweight, losing weight is imperative.

Not likely: If the hoarseness were from cancer it would not go away even with cortisone treatment. You should consult your doctor to avoid further damage. If you smoke or use tobacco in any form, quit while you are ahead.
