Lumbar Sprain/Strain: Back pain from an injury like this is not uncommon.  Often it is treated by a variety of medications including anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants.  This is in addition to therapy provided by a chiropractor, physical therapist, sometimes occupational therapist, and possibly even an orthopedic surgeon.  At this point, a x-ray of your back and/or an MRI may be appropriate.

Avoid BLT: If is is back pain and controllable pain with anti-inflammatories and heat or ice, you should avoid BLT bending lifting and twisting and don't just go to bed. Try to be active walking is a good program. If you are not better in three weeks then you should have a spinal evaluation and imaging to improve your recovery.

Not likely: The data is fairly consistent on back and neck pain after car accidents.  If pain is chronic greater than 1 year it tends to remain problematic.  Treatments can be useful if you get connected with a good spine specialist and get an accurate diagnosis.

See a specialist : Rib pain, muscle strain are among reasons why coughing could be uncomfortable; but, why worry? See a PMR or Ortho doc to determine if it is something more serious

Broken vertebra: Some pain after a fracture is not uncommon but severe back pain should not be considered "normal". It would be best to discuss this with your doctor.

Difficult: After that kind of injury, many problems can develop.  Particularly after fractures, post traumatic arthritis is particularly common.  Many other factors , such as alignment, muscle,tendon and ligament injury, etc. that management of this in this context would be very difficult.  OTC arthritis meds( Alleve) would probably be a safe option to try.

Check w/your Dr: Unless sharp/stabbing pain or weakness or similar symptoms, then first should see if you can get in to your dr for check. Next choice (and quicker / less $) would be urgent care. It is most likely you just had a delay in onset of muscle spasming, which is causing your pain now. An exam can check for this and then get muscle relaxant prescribed, or outpatient imaging or send you to er, depending.

It : It sounds like you have taken the proper steps and seen the right specialists for your condition. Chiropractic care has been a popular alternative form of treatment for spine issues, however these treatments take some time to be effective and require routine visits. Diligence is key, perhaps you can revisit the chiropractic options. Also, accupunture is also a popular alternative treatment. In the meantime, ask your doctor if warm compress and cold compress is recommended. Neck and back pain are sensitive areas to feel pain. In the grand scheme of things, your injury is still fairly new, diligence in treatment and allowing more time to heal is necessary.
