Yes: Yes they can, though much less likely to than a child. Those who are elderly or immunocompromised are more likely. Symptoms are similar to those for kids - itchy bumps on hands and feet with blisters in the back of the throat. Unfortunately no tx - just treat the pain and itching and wait for it to resolve.

Hand-foot-mouth viral: Different enteroviruses cause it.  The most common is Coxsackie virus A16 (named after the New York town where it was discovered); the next most common is enterovirus 71. You might have caught both. Vesicles or red spots on the palm and/or soles of the feet + sores on mucous membranes of the mouth are the diagnostic signs.  Fever and sore throat common. Are these your symptoms? Self limiting.

Yes: This is an illness that is usually experienced in childhood & has more than one strain.If experienced in childhood, the immunity gained is likely lifelong. However we occasionally see this in adults.

Accepted Answer

7-10 days: Hand-foot & mouth disease (hfmd) is a viral illness, most often affecting children, but may also affect adults.  Most pnts. Recover in 7-10 days.  There are very rarely serious complications, but these can be severe.  It is most contagious during the 1st week after exposure, so practice good virual hygiene (wash hands, limits personal contact)>.

D/w your oncologist: Hand food syndrome can be an adverse event of chemo like 5-fu or xeloda (capecitabine). Apply lotion as frequent as possible to your hands. Udderly smooth cream, aveno's or whatever lotion you like. Avoid hot water when you wash hands. For mouth pain- use magic mouth wash , or try orajel. Some pain medication may be needed if topical is not enough. Most importantly, you should discuss with your oncologist.

It happens: The same blisters seen in kids can occur the same way and in the same locations in adults. The HFM pattern illness may also have no spots or a few in only one location. It is an enterovirus, so abdominal pain and or diarrhea are also seen.If you got it from your baby it should have come up within a week at the latest.

Coxsackie virus: Any virus can evoke high fevers, if you want to know whats ailing you there are respiratory viral panel tests that can narrow the field.Take yourself to an urgent care center or ER to find out, may be a different cause

i work with children and have been exposed to hand-foot-and-mouth recently. i have a fever of 101 and muscle aches/ unwell feeling, but no blisters or rash yet.  should i just treat it like a cold, or could hand-foot-mouth present like this in adults?

Hand foot: and mouth disease is caused by the coxsackie virus which may only give fever diarrhea or vomiting 
in adults may or may not give the rash
you should be better in a couple of days
drink more fluids and treat your fever appropiatly

Yes.: Although it usually affects little ones (younger than 5), adults can also get hand, foot, and mouth.  The disease is caused by a group of viruses, and you are most contagious in the first 7 days.  Even after the symptoms pass, you can still be contagious for weeks.  Since the virus is transmitted by contact with nose/throat secretions, hand washing is key!  the alcohol based gels work even better!
