Usually: However, MRI is not always specific in determining cancer from benign.  It cannot assess whether the adrenal tumor is producing hormones.  This requires blood and/or urine tests.

Sometimes: Cushing  disease occurs when  the pituitary gland produces a substance that causes both adrenal glands to secrete too much cortisol. This excess cortisol leads to a series of problems that may include diabetes, hypertension, obesity, fatigue, porr wound healing, and others.  Treatment is usually directed at the pituitary tumor.

Depends: Most adrenal tumors are non-functioning, so they don't produce any excess hormone and you wouldn't have any hormonal effect from it.  However, if the tumor is a hormone-producing tumor, it can produce any of the 4 hormones from the adrenal gland: cortisol, catecholamines (adrenaline), aldsoterone, and dhea-s.

No: I am not aware of any association between gout and adrenal tumors and couldn't find a case in a brief pubmed search.

Depends: A few percent of healthy folks have little round tumors in the adrenals found incidentally on scans.  Radiologists can tell the ones that might be dangerous.  Neuroblastoma (a young person's tumor), pheochromocytoma, or a cortisol- or aldosterone-producing tumor can all produce months / years of vague symptoms before they are detected & treated, and missed tumors can be lethal. Depends on Location: The adrenal gland is only one of the organs involved in hormonal regulation in women. E.G. Pituitary gland, ovaries, etc also play a role. Therefore, a tumor in an organ that is responsible for hormonal regulation in a female's body can lead to development of masculine features.

Take it out: It needs to come out - really rare and potentially malignant. High estrogen levels still increases risk for other cancers, particularly breast and endometrial.  Additionally, for the girl, sexual maturity comes quickly, growth will be stunted due to acceleration of growth plate maturity leading to premature closure. Infertiility and other problems.

Yes: A benign adrenal tumor means that it is not cancerous but that doesn't mean that it can't be a functioning tumor, that is, it can still produce excess hormone.  If the excess hormone is cortisol, you can gain weight.

Accepted Answer

: Maybe. Not all abdominal CT scans would be done in such a way that tiny things would be found. If the doc consulted with the radiologist &amp; focused their attention on a specific set of possibilities it would have a greater chance of finding something by varying their techniques/preparation. A simple abdominal CT done after trauma may not pick up anything but the large obvious tumor.

Can be.: Adrenal tumors and pituitary tumors can develop as part of a syndrome called multiple endocrine neoplasia (men) 1, which is caused by a mutation in a specific gene and is very rare. However, tumors in the parathyroid glands and pancreas, in addition to pituitary tumors, are most common, although a number of other organs may be affected. Thus, many symptoms are likely to be present.
