No: There are very few safe, effective options when it comes to pills to help with weight loss. I enjoy helping people with weight loss, but very rarely doe that involve appetite suppressants, although often other meds are helpful. The best way to start is to make an appointment for a discussion & blood work. It is helpful if you bring a food log (just a day or two of your typical food intake).

Hate them: I haven't had any person have a permanent sustained weight loss with them in my practice.  Qsymia and Belviq (lorcaserin) look promising according to the fda studies however.

Only if: Only if you're trying to lose weight in your wallet. Why would you take something when you don't know what's in it or whether it'll harm you -- particularly when it won't help you. Don't get your medical information from friends, tv or the internet. Invest in healthy nutrition, weight loss, diet, etc.

Most likely not: When taking medication of any kind, you should discuss this directly with the doctor who is in charge of your care. It would not be a good idea to use any over the counter weight loss supplements or herbal pills. Diet and exercise are still the answer for almost everyone, and improve things like depression, ADHD, IBS, and many issues. There is a type of exercise for everyone. Bet wishes!

A few: There are a few drugs that can help with weight loss, if diet and exercise have failed. In order of increasing efficacy:
1. Glucophade (metformin)
2. Alli (orlistat)
3. Phentermine
3. Belviq (lorcaserin)
5. Victoza (liraglutide) and bydureon
6. Topamax (topiramate)
7. Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) (topiramate + phentermine)
unfortunately, side effects tend to increase in proportion to weight loss efficacy.

Probably not good: As a general rule "diet pills" carry side effects, are temporary, and cause universal disappointment if relied upon solely.  I can't address the two you mention as I am not familiar with all the otc medications.  There are healthier and more long-lasting methods available and you should look into those.

Short term: Weight loss pills, such as phentermine, can be used only for a short period of time, e.g. A few weeks. They decrease appetite and work well short term. However, they should only be used in conjunction with a good diet and exercise program. The drug HCG also can work to reduce appetite in a different fashion. It changes your metabolism and is very safe and effective when supervised by a doctor.

Work a little bit: Over-the-counter diet pills decrease one's appetite a bit (they are related to stimulants). A person's desire to eat can be much stronger that a diet pill's power to decrease his appetite, so he will likely continue to eat too many calories. Also, diet pills don't increase one's desire to exercise. If something as simple as a diet pill actually worked, we would not have so much obesity in America.

There are some medical conditions that can cause weight gain and you must discuss this with your doctor.

Several drugs help: The best drug for suppressing appetite is probably topiramate (topamax) which is used for epilepsy and seizures. In clinical trials the average weight loss ranged from 8% (on 50 mg) to 12% (on 200 mg). It does have side effects, which can include tingling (not dangerous), metabolic acidosis (can be monitored and prevented), and, rarely, acute glaucoma (with eye pain). Best to discuss with your md.
