Lack Understanding: It probably comes from believing that such medications are going to make the child a "zombie" or alter the child's personality.  Neither are true.  When i was in training in boston parents in the school system felt teachers were recommending the stimulants so their class would be quiet and remain dull.  On the street the drugs are sold as "speed" for the high that comes with a large dose - danger.

Depends on med: Targeting school days is a way to reduce the overall exposure of a kid to the long term side effects of medication.The school systems focus teaching @ certain hours & meds increase the attention/focus of kids during those hours. For evenings or weekends when the  kid is off enjoying childhood, the med can be used if necessary for sports teams, tutoring etc.

I don't think...: ...You should be asking this question of people who have never seen the child. Get second, third, fifteenth opinion if you want, but get it from people who have at least some basis for advising you. Every kid is different; even doctors who really don't like giving stimulants to children this young will see one who would really benefit, every once in a while.

ADHD & mood: Depends on the type of adhd medication, for example, stimulants such as Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) raise the mood & improves alertness, but can trigger anxiety in ones predisposed to anxiety. Some other medications for adhd such as Clonidine can blunt affect & cause sedation.

Feeling icky: When the dose of stimulants is too high, the patient feels head aches about 45 minutes after the dose, stomach aches, and lethargy.  It is common to have a decreased appetite when the medication is at the correct dose.
